Our differing occupations, cultures, and countries give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable.

HISTORY OF THE ZACHARY ROTARY CLUB

The Zachary Rotary Club was formed in March 1941 with a membership of nineteen charter members.  These nineteen men were the forefathers of the Zachary Rotary Club and set the standards for all of those to come.  The club presently has sixty business and professional men and women members who meet weekly promoting peace, literacy and service to the community. Twenty-seven of those members are proud to say they are a member of the prestigious Paul Harris Society, named for Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris.  Serving as the 2018 – 2019 Zachary President is local Edward Jones Financial Advisor, Terry Gomez.  His goal during his tenure is to adopt the War Veterans Home in neighboring city, Jackson, Louisiana.

Throughout the years, the Zachary Rotary Club has demonstrated their commitment to the community by providing humanitarian service and promoting goodwill.  Each year, the club selects a graduating senior from Zachary High School who best exemplifies the ideals of Rotary and awards them with an annual scholarship.  In 2018, a new scholarship was awarded to three students who have overcome adversities in their lives and became a productive student.  The Rotary Club of Zachary continues to serve in the Zachary Community with projects such as beautifying the local ball park, landscaping around the city, purchasing benches for those visiting our city and at the Zachary Food Pantry, promoting literacy by reading to local school children.

Recent community projects include building Little Free Library’s in our cities’ park.  Little Free Libraries promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges.  They build a sense of community and encourage neighbors to meet one another, promoting friendship. One of the most extensive projects the club has taken on was the building and erecting of an ADA accessible entrance ramp at the Zachary Depot, allowing persons with disabilities as well as the elderly to enter and visit one of the city’s oldest owned structures.  In 2018, ADA accessible picnic tables were purchased for a community park.  Rotarians recently enhanced the lives of the elderly at a local nursing home by painting and refurbishing outdoor furniture, landscaping  the courtyard area and purchasing new patio furniture. The Zachary Rotary Club also partners with The Zachary Charity League who developed Snack Packs 4 Kids, a project to identify and address the gap left between home and school-based meals.

In August of 2017, the City of Zachary endured a series of weather events that would forever change the lives of many Zachary families, friends, neighbors and fellow citizens.  With the help of Rotary International District 6200 Flooding Disaster Recovery funding, we were able to provide flood relief to victims who were in the hardest hit areas in Zachary, enabling them to move forward in their lives and in their rebuilding efforts.

In 2017 we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International in Zachary, Louisiana. During this year, we were proud to host The Zachary Rotary Club 2017 District 6200 Rotary Conference as we gathered to celebrate “A Century of Doing Good.”  And on this 75th Anniversary, the club was proud to say that one of our very own members and past president of the club, Francis Nezianya, served as the 2016-2017 District 6200 Rotary President.

WHAT IS ROTARY?
Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a secular organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 member clubs worldwide. 1.2 million individuals called Rotarians have joined these clubs

HOW DO WE WORK?
Rotary International's impact starts with its members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities' toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, Rotary's member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world. Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization's mission and values in their elected roles.

HOW DID ROTARY GET HERE?
Rotary International has been making history and bringing our world closer together for over 100 years. Since forming in 1905, it has taken on some of the world's toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations—from the UN to Easter Seals—get started.

WHAT CAUSES DOES ROTARY SUPPORT?
We have identified specific causes to target to maximize our local and global impact. At the same time, we understand that each community has its own unique needs and concerns. Through our network of resources and partners, we help clubs focus their service efforts in promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies.
